Carnation Contemporary was founded in 2018 by a collective of Portland-based artists who champion critical and contemporary artwork. We are a cooperative gallery supporting emerging and mid-career artists from Portland and the surrounding region.
We hold space.
1.) We hold a physical space for our members to share their individual and collective art practices. We strive to support one another in recognition that continued creative investigation in this society is a radical act. In doing so we create community inside the confines of these walls, digitally, and beyond.
2.) We hold a space of opportunities. Representation makes privilege visible. Carnation works to embed our ranks and programming with events and exhibitions that relinquish the power inherent in our own organization, elevating unheard voices and marginalized peoples within and outside our membership.
3.) We hold a space dedicated to challenging the exclusivity associated with contemporary arts programming. We aim to draw in audiences and participants outside the arts bell jar in order to facilitate rich conversation and connections between diverse people and ideas.
